Biology and Conservation

Living coelacanths are specialised modern fish with an ancient lineage and a set of anatomical features that make them scientifically remarkable.

Body and deep-water life

Lobed fins

Paired fleshy fins are supported internally by bones and move in a coordinated pattern. They resemble limb movement but are not legs.

Specialised anatomy

Features include an electrosensory rostral organ, hinged skull, persistent fluid-filled notochord, oil-filled buoyancy organ, enamel-like teeth and a three-lobed tail.

Feeding

Coelacanths are generally slow-moving near the seabed and are described as passive drift feeders. Their diet includes fish and cephalopods such as squid, cuttlefish and octopus.

Reproduction

Live young

Sources describe internal fertilisation, eggs developing inside the female and live birth of fully formed young, commonly described as ovoviviparity.

What remains unknown

Important questions remain about mating, gestation, birth sites, newborn survival and whether adults protect or care for young after birth.

Documented developing pups

One documented pregnant African coelacanth contained 26 developing pups. The small number of examined pregnant females limits what scientists can conclude.

Conservation challenges

Deep caves and overhangs are difficult to study. Accidental capture, fishing pressure, habitat disturbance and limited monitoring create risks. Responsible conservation includes protecting deep-canyon habitat, reducing harmful handling, supporting non-invasive monitoring and keeping sensitive locations confidential.

No guaranteed sighting

A coelacanth is not a guaranteed sighting for visitors to St Lucia, Sodwana Bay or iSimangaliso.

Protect the habitat

Conservation does not mean turning every coelacanth site into a tourist attraction. The animal and habitat come first.
